What would King George Say…?
After work I walked to George St for dinner at the Grape. On the way I saw the result of the £3 million traffic calming measures. A while ago I remember reading that some groups were worried that the traffic measures were ruining the historical look and beauty of Edinburgh. I think they have a point. Look at the pictures below I took of where Hanover St meets George St and the George IV statue:
What would King George say? Traffic lights obscuring every tourist photo and making it an eyesore together with numerous arrow signs around the base of his statue telling motorists which way to proceed around the mini roundabout! Madness if you ask me ;-p
For dinner I went to the Grape, which is on the end of George St, where it meets St Andrews Square. Here I ate Potato Wedges (£4.40) followed by a succulent 12oz of Steak (£12.50). The Grape is a decent wine bar that serves food. It attracts the after work crowd and shoppers from George Street. Judging by tonight the crowd is predominantly female, though I would imagine most are married. I think their function room plays host to regular speed dating events. The food portions are huge and the quality is comparable to most gastro-pub meals. Service was prompt and efficient. For an after work bite to eat I would recommend it. I even took a photo of my steak to share:
Ate here last night. A touch on the noisy side for me but managed to get a booth which made it a more pleasant experience. Staff were friendly. Food is simple but well done. A good place for an after shopping meal.
