Edinburgh sightseeing with Google Maps

The phenomenal Google Maps in Satellite view, and the Google Earth application, allow fantastic satellite photography views from across the world. Unfortunately Google’s coverage of central Edinburgh is extremely limited and the satellite photographs are not very detailed. Hopefully this will be rectified soon and I’ll post again when/if this happens.

However, the west of the city is well covered with reasonably detailed aerial photography. This detailed Edinburgh photography starts at Murrayfield stadium. I have picked out some key sightseeing links to good aerial photography of Edinburgh below that are well worth a look:-

Edinburgh Airport
Great views of the planes parked at the terminals and of the runway - there’s even smoke on the runway from a presumed take-off. If you look here you can see a plane in mid-air and the shadow it’s casting on the ground. Maybe the plane that just took off from Edinburgh Airport?

Edinburgh Zoo
This shows the entrance to Edinburgh Zoo on Corstorphine Road and the grounds the zoo occupies. Unfortunately the resolution doesn’t seem to allow individual animal spotting!

Murrayfield Stadium
Edinburgh’s main stadium for sport and other events. This is where Scotland beat France a couple of weeks ago in the 6 nations championship.

Edinburgh Golf Courses
This shows golf courses, such as Bruntsfield, in the part of the Edinburgh map with detailed satellite photography. Click on a course name and the system will navigate you to it, so you’re able to spot those hazards from the air!

Now come on Google get your camera out and give us some detailed photography of central Edinburgh!

  1. Your right about Google Earth not doing a good job of Edinburgh, but there is a website that provides even more detailed arial photos via a browser plug-in that you download. Like Google Earth you can choose to overlay a map too.
