Pie and a pint at Berts bar, Stockbridge

This morning was the Great Scottish Santa run in Edinburgh’s Princes Gardens, where some 2021 persons dressed as Santa turned up to run 1.5 miles in the name of good fun and charity. Unfortunately I did not attend, so don’t have any photos or video to share. But you can read about this on BBC News.

I did make it out to Berts Bar on Raeburn Place, Stockbridge though to watch the Manchester United vs Everton Premier League football match on their Sky TV, that is shown on two plasma TV’s and two normal television sets.

Berts Bar is a welcoming local bar, that is happy to serve locals and the more wealthy students who reside in this part of town. My big gripe with the place is the layout is quite poor, so a lot of the time you end up standing and struggling to see the TV screens when someone moves infront of you - it can be hard to get a seat at peak times. With a better, more logical layout they could easily have more seating and a better pub. Maybe that’s not the appeal of Berts bar though.

However the good points are friendly staff and cheap drinks: a pint of Carlsberg lager was just £1.98. Berts Bar is also ‘famous’ in these parts for its pies. These are the only food they serve, apart from Haggis, Neeps and Tatties or sausage and mash potato. The pies are just £1.50 and I tried the Christmas one, which had a generous of serving of turkey, bacon and cheese inside. My friend had the chicken and mushroom pie, but served with chips and baked beans (£3.50). The pies are really really good - I can’t recommend them enough and for £1.50 they’re an absolute steal to complement a few pints of beer. Although I’m unsure where the extra £2 comes from for a small serving of chips and beans?

Berts Bar is a decent choice for people local to Stockbridge, Edinburgh to watch live sport or to just enjoy a night time drink with friends in Stockbridge, although I’m still of the opinion Stockbridge could do with a ‘killer bar’ to open.
